Sunday morning at the last standing ladies-only gym in Richmond (which I might add is already lacking space and equipment) seems to sometimes be more chaotic than a Target on Boxing Day.
It was very frustrating last Sunday; I was trying to fit in my workout before I had to teach spin class, but ladies were everywhere. They were sitting, yanking, bouncing, rolling, swinging, texting... all weird stuff that should not be happening in the gym. Needless to say, I was not able to complete even half of my exercises. Not a bench, a cable, a weight machine, or even space for a mat was available.
I walked away in frustration and sweat out my annoyance in spin class. I thought to myself there has got to be a way around this, I cannot stand by equipmentless while one lady is using the cable space to stretch, one lady is using the smith machine as her coat/purse rack, and another lady is doing upside down push-ups on the chin-up machine. This cannot be happening. Common people, I just want to workout!
I thought hard for a couple days and then stumbled across the answer to my problems at the produce market.
Garlic.
I will share this secret with you now. You will never again have any problems getting to use the weight machine or gym equipment of your choice... never again.
Please follow these 6 steps in sequence in order to maximize your in-gym workouts, time-under-tension, and efficiency.
Step 1. Buy and roast 1lb of peeled garlic cloves from your local market.
Step 2. Eat 10-20 cloves of roasted garlic per day from Wednesday through Saturday. This can easily be added to any meal: eggs, salad, stirfry, sauces, you name it.
Step 3. Saturday evening turn the heat in your apartment to 20+ degrees.
Step 4. Saturday evening also pick out your gym gear for Sunday morning. Wear the shirt to bed. If you want to really hit em hard, wear two heavy blankets to bed as well, get all nice and sweaty for the morning.
Step 5. It is Sunday Morning! Get up and get ready for the gym! Fuel up, get dressed, ensure your ipod/phone is charged, grab a big bottle of H2O. This step is crucial! You must NOT shower before the gym and must NOT put on deodorant; doing so will lessen the effect.
Step 6. Get to the gym, warm up, and when you walk to the equipment of your choice I am sure you will find it magically clear out. In fact, I tested this out today and oddly enough, most of the ladies finished their workouts about 5 minutes after I got the the gym... maybe a coincidence?
My results: I had all the free space I could ask for and carelessly hogged both sides the cable system for 30 minutes while not being glared at by any one lady.
